Deadlocked
The Secret is Out
If you have been to my Pinterest boards at all, you might have noticed that there was one called ‘Top Secret’. Well, the cat is out of the bag.
I kept the name of this board under wraps because I didn’t want to give away the name of Harry’s new coffee shop. Now that Deadlocked is available, and since I blogged about it yesterday, I figured it was time to update the board and reveal its name.
Check out the Full Fat Coffee Company’s Recipes board on Pinterest. There you will find recipes for things Harry and Isaac might decide to serve in the shop: Soups, sandwiches, baked goods. Yum! I’m getting hungry just thinking about them all.
Bon Appétit!
What’s in a Name?
Have you read Deadlocked yet? If not, you might want to skip this post because it contains a little bit of a spoiler. If you have read Harry’s latest adventure already or you don’t care if I spill the beans and tell you the name of Harry’s new business venture then read on.
Still with me? Great! So, as you know, Harry is opening up a coffee shop. In Deadlocked we get to see a lot of the preparations involved and although there is definitely a bit of Brownie magic going on to help things move smoothly, Harry is hands on.
There is one point in the story where the question of what Harry is going to call the coffee shop comes up and since I’m a ‘pantser’ when it comes to writing, like Harry I was at a loss as to what to call it. And, like Harry, I just kept going, hoping I’d find inspiration. And I did…at the exact moment that Harry did. It was almost magical.
I’m sure every writer feels it at one point or another, that moment when everything just clicks and you feel totally connected to your character(s). That’s what had happened to me. I was on a roll, writing the scene, the dialogue was flowing and suddenly like a light bulb going off above our collective heads, Harry and I came up with the name for the coffee shop. It was perfect and I’m sure I could only have come up with it in that moment. If Isaac and Morris hadn’t been arguing about coffee condiments, if Isaac wasn’t the food snob he was, it wouldn’t have happened. And so, the Full Fat Coffee Company was born. If you want to know the whole story behind the name, I guess you’ll just have to read the book (if you haven’t already).

Isaac

Five days to go!
Our next spotlight as we countdown to Deadlocked, is Isaac.
Although they met under rather unusual circumstances and they have a unique relationship, Harry and Isaac have become friends. For his part, Isaac is enjoying the freedom to be himself for the first time in centuries.
Deadlocked – Excerpt
I think I was still smiling stupidly when I arrived back upstairs. Luckily, Isaac was too busy puttering around the kitchen to notice. It had been several months since Isaac moved in, but I still found it a little weird to see a vampire in an apron. You usually don’t associate vamps with homey domesticity, but Isaac loved to cook. He was a real foodie, but his specialty was dessert. His excessive baking was the whole reason I had decided to open the coffee shop.

Bryce

Six days left!
Today’s spotlight as we countdown to the release of Deadlocked, is Bryce. I’ll let Harry explain Bryce, in her own words:
Deadlocked – Excerpt
Bryce was…well, Bryce was a ghost who happened to live in my computer. A computer hacker and online security expert in life, in death he had chosen to hang around, somehow discovering a way to inhabit the World Wide Web via my old POS computer. A POS, piece of shit, it was no more. Thanks to Bryce and his offshore – probably illegally earned – funds, my computer had been upgraded beyond recognition. I wasn’t going to complain though, since it meant I had access to more of the internet than probably Homeland Security did.

Salvador

Seven days until release!
As part of the countdown to Deadlocked‘s release, I’m re-introducing you to some of the main characters in Harry’s world. Today’s spotlight, Salvador.
Salvador Arroyo is the Magister or leader of the Cimmerian (pronounced Ki-MARE-ian). The most powerful vampire in town and a wealthy businessman in the norm community, he is the Kingpin of the underworld and has his fingers in a lot of pies.
Deadlocked – Excerpt
“Salvador, it’s rude to just let yourself into other people’s homes.” I scowled at him and kicked off my shoes. We have a bit of a difference of opinion as to the current ownership of the old firehall I call my home and place of business. Salvador had signed it over to me, after buying it from the original owner, under duress I’m sure. It had been part of a deal that unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control and totally orchestrated by Salvador, had fallen through. We had renegotiated the terms, but despite having already given the deed for the building to me, Salvador still considered it his until our new deal’s conditions were met. Since that meant it would be another six months before I was free and clear of him, I was not a happy camper. It also meant that despite being a vampire and uninvited, Salvador could enter my home. Damn vampire loopholes.

One Week to Deadlocked
If you are following Harry’s story, you know that Deadlocked, book three in the Harry Russo Diaries, is set for release on June 6. I’ll be counting down this week with posts featuring some of Harry’s supporting cast.
To start off the countdown, here’s a sneak peek (caution, contains a spoiler from Tooth and Claw):
“Harry, my dear Harry! So marvelous to see you.” Salvador clapped his hands together like a gleeful three year old. “You look wonderful. None the worse for wear I see.” He rose to his feet with the grace of a panther from where he had been sitting on my couch. He took a step towards me and I admit it, I flinched. His smile faltered and was replaced by a calculating look. “Ah, I see. The cat is out of the proverbial bag, is it not?” He looked at Isaac who gave him a Gallic shrug. “Well, then,” Salvador continued, his smile returning, “aren’t you going to greet your father properly?” He held out his arms like he expected me to run and throw myself at him.
“No thanks, I’ll pass.” I stepped back, putting more distance between us. I looked at Tomas, Salvador’s lieutenant and a fellow dhamphir, who had also risen from his seat. His expression was shocked, his normally ruddy Mediterranean complexion pale. I couldn’t help myself and I laughed. “At least I wasn’t the last to know.” Tomas scowled at me. We have a love-hate relationship. We love to hate one another.

When life gives you brownies, make coffee.
Angharad ‘Harry’ Russo has had a busy week. She’s fended off a swarm of pixies, battled blood-thirsty redcaps and put an end to a maniacal Fae prince hell-bent on eradicating the entire werewolf population. She’s also decided to open a coffee shop. Is it too much to ask for things to settle down so her life can go back to normal?
Apparently it is. As if being metaphysically bound to Cian Nash, the most aggravating yet desirable man she’s ever met, isn’t enough, Harry’s just found out that the Magister, the biggest, baddest vampire around, is her father. Talk about your daddy issues!
Harry just wants to concentrate on getting the coffee shop open, but between the freaky ghosts that keep haunting her and rogue vampires terrorizing the city, it looks like normal is a thing of the past.
Deadlocked
If you have read the first two books in the Harry Russo Diaries, you know that Harry has had a busy couple of months. All she really wants now is for her life to settle down and get back to normal – or at least as normal as it can be for a witch that sees ghosts.
Her latest project is opening a coffee shop and she tries to immerse herself in the day-to-day work of getting the venture off the ground. Too bad her life just keeps getting in the way of her plans.
Excerpt from Deadlocked:
On the night after the fourth body had been found, Tess and I were hard at work weeding through the ever growing stack of résumés. It seemed like every werewolf in the city had decided they needed a job in the new shop and so I had recruited Tess to help go through them all. Not knowing what to expect in terms of actual customers, I decided to hire two people to start. Mrs. P would continue to operate the flower shop as usual, but now that Tiffy’s social skills had improved, she would move over to provide daytime help in the coffee shop. I figured at first, we’d make sure to always have two people in the shop at any given time. Judging from the applications I had, I didn’t think it would be a problem to hire someone else if customer traffic warranted it.
We were in the process of winnowing down the list to our top five applicants in order to set up some interviews when my ‘spidey-sense’ vampire detector went off. I turned to look at the door just as it swung open, the little bell above it chiming quietly. For a minute, I thought my sixth sense must be on the fritz because standing in the doorway appeared to be a slight, young girl of about sixteen or seventeen. She was dressed in skinny jeans with the knees worn out, tennis shoes and a black hoodie. Her hair, which was dyed a fiery red, was pulled back in a ponytail and for the most part hidden under a frayed, army style cap. She could easily pass for just about any teenager in the neighbourhood. That is until she turned and met my eyes.
