Yacht Club on Pinterest

Do you ever wonder what something looks like when you are reading a story? Maybe you like to see the ‘fantasy casting’ that took place in the author’s head. If this is the case, head on over to my Pinterest page where I have prop galleries for all my books, including the Yacht Club series.

From the Heart – Excerpt

DB’s eyebrows shot up in surprise at the bossy tone in Daisy’s voice.  Slowly, he set his water bottle down on a nearby table and turned to face her.

“I think you have forgotten who you are speaking to, little sub,” DB replied, his voice low and rough.

Amazon Top Twenty

Dead and Kicking has been out for about six months now and I have been very happy with results. When I first published, I really didn’t know what to expect. Would anyone (besides friends and relatives) buy my book?

Top 20 zon com Apr 5

Well, the answer is yes! You have been buying it. In fact, Dead and Kicking just broke into the top twenty on Amazon.com yesterday. While it has been in the top twenty frequently on the Amazon.ca site, this is the first time it has hit the top twenty in the much larger US market.

Besides being an accomplishment in itself, hitting the top twenty also has the added benefit of increasing Dead and Kicking‘s visibility on Amazon. This means that even more readers looking for something to read in urban fantasy will see Harry’s first book and hopefully buy it.

A big thank you to everyone that has already bought Dead and Kicking. Can I ask a favour though? How about leaving a review on Amazon, Goodreads or whatever retailer you purchased your copy from? Reviews are the fuel in the marketing engine, especially for an independent author such as myself, and now that more people are finding Dead and Kicking, your favourable review might just be the extra push they need to decide to click ‘Buy’. It’s not hard to leave a quick, honest review. It only takes a couple sentences.

From the Heart – Excerpt

“Are you all right?”  DB rose from his seat.

“I’m fine, just a muscle cramp or something.”  Daisy frowned and rubbed her hip.

“Here, come sit down a minute.”  DB took her by the elbow and led her to a chair.

“I’m fine, really.” Daisy pulled her arm from his grasp.

“Sit.” DB hadn’t meant to sound so demanding, but he found the Dom in him reacting to her sub.  He fixed her with a look that told her he expected no protest.

Daisy swallowed visibly and slowly sank into the chair, averting her eyes from his.  Her skin flushed and she felt the flutter of sexual arousal.  Damn it! No, not now!  She shouldn’t be sexually attracted to a potential client.

“Really,” Daisy’s voice wavered and she paused to clear her throat, trying to get her libido under control.  “It was just a muscle spasm.  I’m fine.”

DB knelt beside her and lifted her leg from the floor.  Daisy sucked in a breath.  He looked at the four-inch wedge on her foot and raised an eyebrow.  “It’s probably from walking around on these stilts,” he said with a wry grin.  “I don’t know how you do it all day.”

Daisy laughed nervously.  His hands felt warm on her skin.  “They’re a necessity for someone as short as I am.”  She sucked in another shocked breath as he began to massage her calf, moving his hands slowly up her leg.  He reached the edge of her skirt where it sat just above her bare knee and she gasped, pulling her leg from his grasp and setting her foot on the floor.  “Thank you.  I’m fine.”  She raised her eyes to meet his and blinked.  It took every ounce of control she had to keep her eyes on his and not look away.  She cleared her throat again and rose from her seat.  “I’ll just…”  She raised her hand and gestured towards her makeshift cooking area.  “I’ll just finish setting up.”

Damn the Man

DB quote

From the Heart – Excerpt

“No, sorry…that needs to go over there, by the bar area.”  Daisy pointed the delivery man in the right direction and then turned back to look over the room.  It was all coming together, for the most part anyway.

Suddenly frowning, she shook her head and called out, “Wait! Wait!” and hurried over to where another pair of workers were setting up the bar height tables.  “They need to be spread out more.  Don’t bunch them all together.  People need to have room to mingle.”  She showed them where each table should go, ensuring a nice traffic flow around the area and out to the deck.

Backing up to take in the whole room, she suddenly collided with a hard, unyielding body.  “Oh!  I’m sorry…” She turned to face the owner of the body, her hands on his chest. “Oh!  It’s you.”

DB grinned, grabbing her wrists to steady her.  “Try not to look too disappointed.”

“It’s not that, it’s just…”

“You’ve been avoiding me.”

Daisy frowned and pulled her arms away from him, backing up a step.  “I have not.  You’re a busy man and I’m a busy woman.  Our schedules just haven’t overlapped.”   That and the fact that she had tried to time any visits to the site as early in the morning as possible in the hope of avoiding an encounter just like this one.

“And the club?”  DB looked at her with raised eyebrows.  “Are you too busy for the club as well?”

“As a matter of fact,” she started to reply but stopped at the heated look in DB’s eyes.  She cleared her throat and then stood up straighter, thrusting her chin a little higher in the air.  “I’ve been very busy.  Besides, what I do in my leisure time is not something I generally discuss with clients.”

DB grinned mischievously.  “Uh huh.  You’re just chicken.”

“I’m what?” Daisy looked at him in mock outrage.

“You’re afraid to go to the club because you know I’ll be there and you can’t keep your hands off me.”

“I…I…most certainly can!”

“You had your hands all over me a second ago.”  DB grinned at her.

“I…that was different, I was just catching my balance.”  She looked at him, her cheeks burning.  Damn the man.  He was teasing her and she was letting it get to her.  She cleared her throat again…

Happy New Year!

Did I fool you? No? I didn’t really think I would. But did you ever wonder why April 1st is celebrated as April Fools’ Day?

april-fools-day-banner

According to one theory, it could actually have a lot to do with the New Year and the Pope. Pope Gregory XIII, that is. You know, the guy that introduced the Gregorian Calendar? The calendar the majority of the world uses today.

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII introduced a new standard calendar for Christian Europe that would take his name and centuries later become the standard internationally in the 21st century.

Prior to the 15th century, Europe’s nations and city states operated using the Julian calendar. The Gregorian calendar moved the date of the new year from April 1 to January 1, among other changes. Catholic monarchies were naturally its earliest adopters, though Protestant nations later followed suit.

Given the nature of the reform, both in terms of communicating such a fundamental change to a large population and dealing with critics of the new calendar, some Europeans continued to celebrate the new year between March 25 and April 1. April fools were those who still celebrated the holiday in the spring, and were the subject of pranks and ridicule by those who observed the new year months ago.

It is worth noting that many different cultures have had days of foolishness around the start of April, give or take a couple of weeks. The Romans had a festival named Hilaria, the Hindu calendar has Holi, and the Jewish calendar has Purim. Perhaps there’s something about the time of year, with its turn from winter to spring, that lends itself to lighthearted celebrations.

Deadlocked

If you have read the first two books in the Harry Russo Diaries, you know that Harry has had a busy couple of months. All she really wants now is for her life to settle down and get back to normal – or at least as normal as it can be for a witch that sees ghosts.

Her latest project is opening a coffee shop and she tries to immerse herself in the day-to-day work of getting the venture off the ground. Too bad her life just keeps getting in the way of her plans.

Excerpt from Deadlocked:

On the night after the fourth body had been found, Tess and I were hard at work weeding through the ever growing stack of résumés.   It seemed like every werewolf in the city had decided they needed a job in the new shop and so I had recruited Tess to help go through them all.  Not knowing what to expect in terms of actual customers, I decided to hire two people to start.  Mrs. P would continue to operate the flower shop as usual, but now that Tiffy’s social skills had improved, she would move over to provide daytime help in the coffee shop.  I figured at first, we’d make sure to always have two people in the shop at any given time.  Judging from the applications I had, I didn’t think it would be a problem to hire someone else if customer traffic warranted it.

HildeWe were in the process of winnowing down the list to our top five applicants in order to set up some interviews when my ‘spidey-sense’ vampire detector went off.  I turned to look at the door just as it swung open, the little bell above it chiming quietly.  For a minute, I thought my sixth sense must be on the fritz because standing in the doorway appeared to be a slight, young girl of about sixteen or seventeen.  She was dressed in skinny jeans with the knees worn out, tennis shoes and a black hoodie.  Her hair, which was dyed a fiery red, was pulled back in a ponytail and for the most part hidden under a frayed, army style cap.   She could easily pass for just about any teenager in the neighbourhood.  That is until she turned and met my eyes.

Sex!

Yep, I wrote a book with sex in it. In fact, I’ve written several now, including my soon-to-be released hot and spicy novella series, The Yacht Club. Writing sex scenes can be a lot of fun and while it might be a tad embarrassing to have my MOTHER read them, at least I know my BROTHER never will (at least that’s what he says).

The other day I found this terrific blog post about writing your first sex scene and it was laugh out loud funny so I thought I would share. Even if you’re not a writer, these are hilarious and worth the read.  Definitely NSFW.
